Fayette wins big at Warner Robins!

This past weekend the Fayette County Speech and Debate team traveled south to Warner Robins High School. The team brought home an award in almost every event we entered!

In Varsity Policy, juniors Trusha Daya and Navroz Tharani finished the top public school team after preliminary rounds. They picked up wins against Northview HS, Northside HS, and Cairo HS. They finished 5th place overall, losing in quarterfinals to the eventual co-champions. Trusha was named 6th best Varsity speaker and Navroz finished 7th best. Trusha and Navroz will travel next to the Samford University invitational in October, in hopes of qualifying for the National Tournament of Champions.

In Junior Varsity Policy, sophomores Melissa Issa-Boube and Nageen Raziuddin had their best finish of the year finishing in the top ten and receiving an octofinalist placing. Freshmen Yosef Shelbaya and Bryce Tyburski finished in the top ten as well, receiving an octofinalist placing in Novice Policy debate.

In Lincoln Douglas, senior Eric Bogert was given a rematch of the 2008 State Championship round against a tough opponent from Pace Academy. Eric, the state runner up in 2008, turned out victorious in the Warner Robins final round. This is Eric’s second straight tournament championship in the state this year.

In Duo Interpretation, DJ Moore and Malcolm Harris finished 5th place overall in their first DUO tournament ever! In Extemporaneous Speaking, sophomore Arif Hosein was named Runner Up after five tough rounds of competition.

Overall, it was a great weekend for the Tiger debate team!

Fayette finishes as the Runner Up at Westminster!

At the first tournament of the season for first and second year debaters, over 30 schools and almost 200 policy teams gathered to debate. Fayette County brought 6 first year teams and 1 second year team.  It was a great weekend for the debaters.

In first year debate, Andrew Huntsberry and Joel Kovalcson finished in the top thirty out of almost 100 – with a record of 3-1.  Great job guys!  Helen Ahga and Kayla Smith went undefeated and were named runner ups for the entire tournament!  This is the highest placing Fayette County has ever had at the season opener.

Helen Ahga was also named top speaker in the first year division – this is the second time Fayette has received this honor in three years!

Great job everyone!
